The goal of myofascial release techniques is to stretch and loosen the fascia so that it and the connected structures can move more freely, and the patient’s motion is restored. This form of therapy involves the therapist applying pressure to an affected area to help decrease pain, reduce muscle tension and swelling, relieve muscle spasm, stretch fascial adhesions, and improve circulation. Myofascial therapy can complement to other nonsurgical treatments that aim to control pain and keep muscles and joints warm and loose.
